GUIDELINES FOR AN INTERVIEW
Pre-interview
- Get as much information as you can, from the consultant you saw,
about the company you are going to be interviewed by.
- If the consultant can't give you enough information, or by arrangement
with the consultant, phone the company yourself and explain that you
are having an interview and request information such as leaflets, brochures
etc. about the company and their products, services etc.
- This action will show that you have initiative and will give you a
valuable discussion topic at the time of the interview
- Be very sure you are on time. Get there some five minutes before to
be on the safe side. Do not be late.
Appearance
-
Dress the part of the position you are applying
for. For example, If you are seeking a Site Foreman position, do not
dress in a suit.
-
Whichever way you dress, your clothes should be
clean and neat.
Attitude
-
If you take the trouble of going for an interview,
then go there with a positive attitude so that you will be offered
the position. Be confident without being arrogant.
-
Even if during the course of the interview you
realise that the specific position is not for you, continue to sell
yourself. There may be another opening!
The Interview
- You should give the interviewer the impression that they are in control.
- Ensure that you understand the questions fully and correctly and that
you then answer them clearly and to the point. Do not rattle on and
on.
- IT IS IMPORTANT TO ALSO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FOLLOWING:
- The position that you are applying for. What are the main functions,
duties, responsibilities?
- Who is the person you will be reporting to? Their name and designation.
- Who are the subordinates you would have, if any?
- The company itself - their future plans, policies etc.
- The Department or Division you will be working in.
- DO NOT specifically ask about prospects. You should be able to
deduce this from the above questions.
- In asking questions you will automatically be in control of the
interview. This does not mean however, that you should show superiority.
On the contrary, remain Humble and Sincere.
- Be Interested. Do not try and be Interesting! Do not give the
impression of being a "Robot" either. If the interviewer
has a sense of humour, crack a joke but don't overdo it. Keep the
comments/jokes clean.
- If the interview was arranged by ourselves, give us some feedback.
Having a better knowledge of the Employer will enable us to better
counsel you with regard to constructive comments relating to whether
you should accept a position with that company or not.
